WRITING OPPORTUNITIES

Playwriting workshop with Tamsin Rees – The Nuts and Bolts of Playwriting
Join playwright Tamsin Rees for an informal workshop on writing for the stage. Where we will be thinking about what a playwright is, your voice as a writer, ideas generation and thinking about structure. The workshop is beginners friendly, perfect for people interested in expanding their horizons into play writing, or build some practical skills and knowledge around play writing in a chilled, cosy, and informal environment.

ClassicsFest 2026 Writing Competition
ClassicsFest returns to the Lit & Phil from 14th - 16th May 2026 with Food & Feasting in Antiquity - and they're launching an exciting new writing competition to mark the occasion. They're looking for writers from North East England to pitch a bold, imaginative script idea inspired by the legendary ancient Roman foodie Apicius. The winning idea will be developed into a 30 - minute show, performed here at Alphabetti Theatre, with a £1500 commission, one-to-one development time with director Ed Cole, and expert guidance from chef-historian Sally Grainger. Whether you're a first-time writer or already established, this is your chance to bring ancient flavours to life on stage.
Our regular writing group and Common Thread are continuing this year, alongside a monthly guest writer led workshop. Stay tuned for more details, they should be uploaded in the next week (w/c 12/01/26).
We are currently overhauling our artist development programme. Please keep an eye out here/on our socials/via our newsletter for more info.
