PERFORMING OPPORTUNITIES

Response Programme

Our response programme has been offering early career actors the chance to perform exciting original short plays since 2019. We are delighted to be offering further opportunities for actors in response productions between September 2022 and March 2023.

Who's it for?  Emerging and early career actors aged 18 and over. We welcome applications from those taking their first steps in theatre, or who are looking to change direction and try different performing arts disciplines.

Other than the above, there are no restrictions on who can apply.

We are always interested to hear from people who identify as LGBTQ+, as neurodivergent, as having a disability, and/or who are from working class backgrounds. However, for our upcoming open auditions we are creating a specific opportunity for artists who identify as part of the global majority.

Alphabetti is proud to have programmed a number of productions by artists from the global majority in our main programme during the 2022/23 season. We are also keen to cast as many global majority actors in our response programme as we can.

Is it paid? Yes! Each actor will receive a fee of £600.

How does it work?

  • We are recruiting emerging actors to perform in productions of new 15 minute plays, matching them with emerging directors from the North East region.

  • Each play will respond to one of the main productions in our programme (listed below) and will have been selected from submissions to our Response Writing competition. (Find out more about the competition here)

  • Actors will rehearse the play for a week, working with their director in our rehearsal space – they will receive the script at 10am on the first day of rehearsals.

  • Support will be provided by a mentor to help the director and actors get the show ready for a professional off-book performance - mentors will be chosen from a team of response programme associates

  • The play will be performed immediately after the main production for 3 nights (Tuesday to Thursday) during the last week of its run (dates below).

How do I get involved? We find actors for response productions via open auditions, which usually run twice a year. Auditions take the form of inclusive workshops, where actors of diverse backgrounds work with each other and potential response directors, guided by response associates.

We ran two open audition rounds in 2022, in January and August and a third, specifically for artists from the global majority.

When is it?  We are currently applying for funding for our next season - Please keep an eye out for our next round of auditions.
