Title of post: General Manager

Hours: Standard 40 hours, with regular evening and weekend work

Salary: £20,622

Holiday entitlement: 30 days per annum (including public holidays)

Contract: Initial 1 year contract (with intention to extend) subject to 3 month probationary period

Start: As soon as possible approx. end of April/ start of May 2021

Job Description

The General Manager provides the glue which holds together a beautifully diverse mixture of people, projects and priorities. The General Manager will manage our people and our day-to-day operations – with a main focus on the bar/café space however role will also including managing private events, studio holders, rehearsal room bookings and general company administration. You will also be part of the programming team/ monthly meeting. You’ll be responsible for the profitable development of these areas, maximising return on investment. The role involves bar shift work (two/three evenings per week). The post holder will recognise and value all that makes Alphabetti Theatre one of the most ambitious and exciting producing and receiving houses in the region.


You will have line management responsibility for the general assistants, the general supervisor and the technical coordinator.

The role will include but not exclusive to:




  • Oversee the maintenance of all venue equipment and facilities taking responsibility for any damages and ensuring replacements and repairs are conducted as and when required

  • Ensure that the venue is always clean and tidy

  • Take responsibility for stock control, including ordering, acceptance and maintenance of stock

  • Raise and pay invoices in a timely manner for stock, rehearsal room & office hires.

  • Work with the Venue Producer to ensure implement and undertake effective box office, front of house and cashing up procedures for these.

  • Take responsibility for Health & Safety, Fire and Safeguarding policies, ensuring that all members of the team are uptodate and aware of the procedures.



  • Manage and implement the rota ensuring appropriate cover across the entire venue dependent on activity

  • Take responsibility for inducting, training and developing staff and volunteers to ensure they meet the high standards Alphabetti Theatre requires and their full potential

  • Monitor progress against clear objectives for each individual member of staff, through regular appraisals

  • Empower staff with awareness of targets and the ‘bigger picture’

  • Ensure that all staff deliver excellent customer service

  • Encourage and act upon customer comments and complaints to improve the theatre’s

customer care, in conjunction with the Artistic/Executive Director.

  • Ensure all the staffs are suitably trained in all aspects of customer care, health and safety, licensing authority regulations and fire evacuation procedures.

  • Work closely with the rest of the creative team to ensure the theatre and all events operate smoothly and efficiently and in accordance with the companies policies.

  • Hosting ‘Meet and Greets’ with in-house and visiting companies Bar:

  • Oversee bar service, ensuring excellent and efficient service

  • Be the venue license holder

  • Ensure the bar area is clean and tidy

  • Create and implement effective cashing up procedures

  • Create and implement a thorough working procedures



  • Research new stock ideas keeping up to date with popular food and beverage trends, occasionally creating theme to the longer run productions.




  • Manage rehearsal room bookings, including following up on enquiries, arranging quotes, sending confirmation and raising invoices

  • Work closely with the Marketing coordinator to develop effective advertisements around the rehearsal space and venue hire offers

  • Manage any private hires for parties with the artistic / executive director. General:


  • Attend weekly Company meetings and Operations meetings

  • Attend monthly programming meetings

  • Order office stationery and other ad hoc office purchases as and when required

  • Running and maintaining the website.


Person Attributes required for the role




  • At least 1 year experience of supervisor or higher in a busy bar environment with knowledge of food service

  • Excellent organisational/filing skills and the ability to manage resources effectively.

  • Fastidiously hygienic and understand the requirements for a bar/food service.

  • Excellent customer service skills

  • Experience in managing cash and budgets

  • Ability to work effectively under pressure

  • Ability to work alone, show initiative and take ownership, or as a member of a team.

  • A positive, proactive and flexible approach.

  • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills with the confidence to represent Alphabetti Theatre externally.

  • Like dogs.

  • Passion for & interest in the arts, especially theatre.
