Title: General Supervisor (casual)
Location: Alphabetti Theatre
Contract: Part-time, casual, minimum 16 hours per week (2 days).
Initial 5 7-month contract with intention to extend. Mostly evenings and weekends.
Wage : £13.21 per Hour
Benefits: 30% discount at Alphabetti bar, complimentary tickets to all Alphabetti productions,
automatic enrolment in company pension scheme.

Annual Leave/Holiday:
You will be entitled to a minimum of 12 days of paid annual leave per leave year in addition to all UK public and bank holidays. This meets the statutory minimum under the Working Time Regulations 1998. Due to the nature of our business you may be required to work on evenings or bank holidays where needs demand. If you are required to work outside of your weekly allocation of hours you will accrue additional holiday entitlement to be taken at a mutually agreed time.
ROLE OVERVIEW
The General Supervisor plays a pivotal role in bringing Alphabetti Theatre’s vision to life by ensuring our venue operates seamlessly, safely, and inclusively every day. Working closely with the General Manager, you’ll maintain a welcoming space that reflects our values while overseeing front-of-house operations, staff development and audience experience.
Alongside the General Manager, the General Supervisor will act as line manager to the General Assistants, ensuring all casual staff and volunteers are appropriately trained and represent the organisation in a fitting manner. The General Supervisor will support and take accountability for all bar and box office proceedings, maintaining oversight of operations in all Front of House areas. Where necessary, the General Supervisor will also support the Marketing & Communications Manager, assisting on marketing strategies, campaigns and messaging.
Often acting as the first port of call for anyone entering the building, the General Supervisor must look to deliver the warmest possible welcome to artists, audiences and anyone who crosses the Alphabetti threshold, while driving our missions to build relationships, nurture creativity, and forge pathways for artists and communities.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Venue Operations & Accessibility

Ensure the smooth daily running of theatre bar/café, upholding Alphabetti’s commitment to accessibility and creating a welcoming environment

Maintain cleanliness, tidiness and organisation in all Front of House areas, implementing cleaning schedules and delegating tasks to general assistants

Oversee opening/closing procedures, ensuring our spaces are safe and prepared for artists, staff, and visitors

Collaborate with the Marketing & Comms Manager to assist with promotions and campaigns
Hospitality & Customer Experience

Work with General Manager to manage bar service, stock control and ordering incorporating creative themes that align with productions

Train staff in exceptional customer service, ensuring every interaction reflects Alphabetti values

Act on customer feedback to continuously improve the theatre’s offerings and accessibility

Research trends in food/beverage and audience engagement to enhance the theatre’s appeal
Team Leadership & Development

Create staff rotas for General Assistants, ensuring fair and efficient coverage for all activities

Lead inductions, training, and development for General Assistants and volunteers

Empower teams with knowledge of Alphabetti’s artistic goals, encouraging shared ownership of our Vision & Mission.
Safety & Compliance (with GM)

Uphold Health & Safety, Fire, and Safeguarding policies, conducting regular training and drills.

Ensure all staff and visiting artists are briefed on emergency procedures.

Work with the General Manager to maintain licensing and regulatory compliance
MONITORING & EVALUATION
Where appropriate, targets may be set for specific projects or productions, however as an employer Alphabetti does not aim to measure performance or success via a rigid target-based approach.

Regular 1-1 meetings, known as ‘Pitstops’ with your line manager (General Manager) will be arranged, where you will be encouraged to review your own performance, and create your own plan for personal development. Such plans can be monitored and evaluated in a manner bespoke to you and your ways of working.
‘Pitstop’ meetings will be held at least once every six months, and as regularly as once every two months, if requested either by you or your line manager.
At least once a year your ‘Pitstop’ meeting will act as an annual review, held with the Artistic/Executive Director where alignment with the responsibilities laid out in this document will be evaluated.
Person Attributes required for the role
-
At least 1 year experience of supervisor or higher in a bar, restaurant or theatre environment with knowledge of hospitality sector

Excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage resources effectively.

Good understanding of hygiene practices and understand the health and safety requirements for a bar/food service.

Excellent customer service skills
-
Experience in managing cash and budgets

Ability to work alone, show initiative and take ownership, or as a member of a team.

A positive, proactive and flexible approach.

Passionate about fringe theatre, community-driven arts and the North East region
