Tête à Tête: The Opera Festival

27 & 28 June 2025

The UK's engine room of adventurous new opera opens this year in Newcastle with two nights of pioneering work from local artists mentored by Tête à Tête.

Check out the rest of the festival here.

A buffet of new operatic extracts and experiments, from Newcastle and the surrounding area.

With four shows in one hour, come and see tales of dragons, queer wanderings, and ferocious rivalries as their creators start bringing them into the world.

WYRM 2.0 is an ecofeminist work-in-progress sharing early material from a mythic tale spanning centuries, with live voice, handmade electronics, and an aria inspired by Scandinavian Kulning.

Acrimonia is two extracts from an upcoming tale of Renaissance rivalries and exploitation, with new writing for lute rooted in modern music and experimental electronic guitar.

Scratch performance ‘Opera du Mal’ is a Queer, anti-misogynist reinterpretation of the poetry of Baudelaire. The aria 'Le Serpent Qui Danse' will be performed, exploring themes of Queerness and Catholicism.

Last, the Escape Room Opera is entirely unknown. It will be written by a team of composers and writers trapped in an escape room just four days before, and they’ll have to write a show to escape!

“An endlessly inventive powerhouse” - The Guardian

“The sort of deliciously unorthodox opera performance the world desperately needs more of” - OperaWire
