Richard Roundtree stars as John Shaft, a private detective hired to rescue a Harlem mobster’s daughter from the Italian Mafia. As he is sucked ever deeper into Manhattan’s criminal underworld, Shaft finds himself simultaneously up against the Black and Italian Mobs and the cops.

 

This Blaxploitation classic from director Gordon Parks represents one of the earliest and most influential examples of a Black action hero, and features gunfights, sex, explorations of masculinity and Black Power.
